In this site, we plan on providing you up-to-date information from our Pine Mountain Property Owners Association, Inc. in North Carolina Firewise Committee.
In November 2016, our neighbor South Mountains State Park had a wildfire that consumed over 6,000 acres and was at our backdoor. Our local fire and rescue departments were working day and night to protect the park and wildlife as much as possible and provide the residents of Pine Mountain with as much help and assistance as possible – teaching us how to protect our homes.
The wildfire sparked a deep interest in all community neighbors and with the help of Eric Muecke, Urban Forestry Specialist and Firewise Program Assistant an Assessment Book containing a ton of information is now available to all property owners of Pine Mountain POA, NC. Check for Lower Homeowner Insurance:
Contact your homeowners insurance company to discuss lowering your homeowner insurance. Have ready information about Pine Mountain’s Firewise Community awarded program – NFPA Firewise USA, the distance between your home and the local fire department and measure the distance between your house and the nearest fire hydrant.

These sheets are to be used for any time or money you spend on your home and/or surrounding property for the purpose of reducing the probability of wildfire loss.
Examples of Activities:
- Removing trees, brush, grass from around your structures
- Cleaning gutters of pine needles and other debris. Cleaning the roof and clearing anything flammable from within 3-feet of the base of the structure.
- Removing tree limbs less than 6 – 10 feet from the ground around structures
- Replacing a shake-shingle roof with a non-flammable alternative
Please turn in your completed Home Assessment and Time sheets to any member of the Firewise Committee.
Firewise Program Requirements
- Complete a community assessment
- Form a Firewise board or committee in order to accept the assessment, create an action plan and monitor activity.
- Hold a Firewise Day event
- Invest at least $2/capita annually in community mitigation activities
- Complete and submit a program application
